Turmeric - The 411

Turmeric - The 411

Turmeric - the Golden Spice, ancient Ayurvedic medicinal herb, super-effective accompaniment for joint discomfort; I have never actually written anything dedicated to Turmeric, yet I spout off about it constantly, and my colleagues also when creating the internet pages for our Turmeric products.

Maybe you don’t know the full story or the full potential? The flexibility of this staining yellow spice, the health benefits beyond the joints, nor the tasty recipes that you can include it into?

I hope to open your eyes and broaden your awareness of this multi-functioning, all healing spice.

First of all, if you know curry then you must know that turmeric is what makes it yellow! Ever make curry yourself? I was constantly beating myself every time I cooked it, calling myself a failure and apologizing to gourmands who would be eating it that it is not a ‘proper’ curry. It always turned out brown. Then I discovered that turmeric is the magic ingredient I had been missing, and woah goodbye apologies and hello pride - my curries are a delicious and appeasing yellow (the taste remains unaltered I may add). Another plus about serving my yellowed curry to guests and family is that I am also serving them a dish that is extremely beneficial to their health. Now, I am not telling everybody to go out and buy a load of spices and become curry cuisine experts, but this is one tasty way of getting turmeric into your system.

As I am associated with Vimerson Health who sell turmeric supplements I can’t right out tell you that “YES, Turmeric will heal you!” but here is a list of benefits that you may be pleased to feel the effect of:

Reduce inflammation of muscle, joints, and ligaments*;
Relieve discomfort brought on by mobility restrictions*;
Helps strengthen the immune and digestive systems*;
Support healthy joints, eyes, skin, and hair*;
Enhances overall mood and wellbeing*;
Promotes cardiovascular health*; and
Boosts brain function and memory*.
(those asterisks are for the FDA, claim at the bottom)

If ever you want to know for certain how any spice or herb works for your health I always advise you to check out the reviews left by people. Honest feedback from honest people, and not a marketing ploy. And I don’t just mean for Vimerson Health but in general!
Anyhow, to continue with turmeric. As I mentioned already it was used as a medicinal spice in the Ayurvedic practice. If you want to know more about Ayurveda, click here to read the blog. It fast became known as the Golden Spice by merchants and tradesmen all along the Spice Route between historical civilizations in Asia, Northeast Africa, and Europe. Primarily used as a dye (and boy, does it stain!) it soon became traded for its apparent health-boosting properties.

If you are not into Indian food, then turmeric can be consumed as a drink, as part of a concoction named Golden Milk (we have a recipe for vegan ice-cream version right here), or how about as a salad/grilled veggies dressing.
I guess what I am trying to say is that it is versatile. I like to pan-fry some Mediterranean veggies in olive oil and add a teaspoon of turmeric to it, or if I am cooking up lentils I always add it in with some cumin.

One interesting fact about turmeric is that to receive the full absorption, therefore reap its fullest potential, it is advisable to eat it with black pepper! So don’t forget to give the pepper mill a few twists when in your kitchen frenzy!

I hope I have covered a lot here in regards to turmeric and answered some of your questions. Please leave a comment below to share some of your turmeric stories! And also if you have questions, I will answer them all!
