Unsweetened Apple Butter

Apple Day (October 21, 2019), which is aimed at celebrating apples in every sense of the word, first started in 1990. The origins of Apple Day were an idea to spread environmental awareness and a celebration of the fall season as a whole which quickly grew into a public holiday.
Even nowadays, Apple Day is a reminder of the importance of orchards, fields, and nature to humanity. Moreover, this concept contributed to the development of farmers’ markets and encouraged people to shop for less harmful and organically sourced foods. The healthcare industry, namely the Cancer Research Campaign, look to the occasion as a way to nudge people into a healthier food regime. 
I have been inspired by this event and this whole concept. I aim to do most of my shopping at the local farmers market and always buy my apples organic. And as a result, here is a recipe for unsweetened apple butter (although I will allow you to add some sweetener if you wish!).  Homemade recipes are always better, I believe. Plus you get the glorious smell while it’s cooking wafting through your home. Despite the fact that it is cooking time around 8 hours, it's your slow cooker doing most of the work, so let's get to it!
Prep Time 10 min                     Cook Time 8 hours                Total Time 8 hours 10 min
What do you need:
Slow Cooker
Blender

Ingredients:
7 medium cored and chopped apples (preferably organic)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 cup water (still water)

Method:
1. Prepare your apples by removing the core and chopping into cubes. Place at the bottom of the slow cooker. Sprinkle with the spices and cover with water.
2. Cover and cook in the slow cooker on low for six hours, until the apples have turned a dark brown in color.
3. Transfer the apples to the blender and mix until smooth. Taste and add more spice if desired. Here you can add some sweetener if you like, like honey or molasses.
4. Reset your slow cooker to high and continue cooking for another two hours. Stir it every 30 minutes to ensure the apple butter doesn’t burn on the bottom of the slow cooker.
5. Transfer into a suitable dish, let cool and then place in the fridge covered. Enjoy your apple butter on your morning toast or afternoon snack.
